Grace Banks, a female author who studies the phenomenon of solid doll obsession
Grace Banks uses photos of celebrity dolls, such as Marilyn Monroe and Lady Gaga, in her new book, “Play With Me,” hoping to promote the idea of “reclaiming ownership of the female body.
The cover of this book is a solid doll version of Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Another photo taken underwater shows a solid doll in a red dress staring at the camera, and another shows two female solid dolls lying on a double bed, snuggled up against each other.
There are also photos showing a solid doll that resembles the quirky singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, who is about to star in the new movie “A Star is Born” alongside Bradley Cooper.
Grace Banks says: “In my book I explore the autonomy of the female body in today’s political, economic and social climate and how it is being appropriated through solid dolls, mannequins, computer graphics, nude neon relief sculptures and other forms of femininity.”
“Artists are reclaiming ownership of the female body from the metaphors and spaces of the male-defined female body prevalent in contemporary art.”
The art of the female nude is one of the most controversial topics in the post-internet era.In the spring of 2016, Kim Kardashian West posted a nude photo of herself with two black stripes all over her body on Instagram.
In a matter of seconds, the photo garnered 1.7 million likes, checked over 336,000 comments, was retweeted thousands of times on social media, and the world went crazy over it, from showbiz celebrities and fans to the general social masses.
The book was first published in 2017, and with it, Grace hopes to highlight the trend of objects commonly used to objectify women, such as solid dolls, neon strip signs, and mannequins.
Some of the earliest solid dolls were invented by Dutch sailors in the 17th century who needed company on long journeys at sea. Around 1992, the worldwide market for physical dolls grew, and in the last 20 years, the dolls have become more realistic looking and increasingly well crafted.Because it can be purchased online, the physical doll market is growing at a high rate.
Grace adds, “I wanted to emphasize political radicalism in the book, so I’ve included chapters highlighting the most pressing issues facing women today, including the commodification of women’s bodies, men’s bias against women’s bodies in art, the changing gender binary, and the future of women’s bodies.”
